Amidst increasing tensions between India and the United States, a strong wave of economic nationalism is growing. The central cause of the current friction is the substantial 50% tariff implemented by the US, specifically by Donald Trump. This has led to widespread anger, prompting calls for boycotts of American businesses and products. US companies present in India, including well-known brands like Pepsi, Coca-Cola, Subway, KFC, and McDonald’s, are facing substantial challenges and the possibility of consumer boycotts. Yoga guru Ramdev has been vocal in his support for this movement, advocating for a complete boycott of all US products. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has urged the public to support ‘swadeshi’ products, stressing the importance of supporting goods manufactured in India to bolster the nation’s economy. The Indian government has labeled the tariffs as ‘unfair, unjust and unreasonable’, vowing to protect national interests.
