Venus Mission: The Union Cabinet chaired by PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved the ‘Venus Orbiter Mission’ along with many important proposals related to space. In this mission, like Mangalyaan, an orbiter will also be sent to Venus, which will study its atmosphere, temperature, surface and weather etc. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav gave information about these decisions. After the approval of the Cabinet, the eyes of the world are once again fixed on ISRO.

The total fund sanctioned for “Venus Orbiter Mission” (VOM) is Rs 1236 crore, out of which Rs 824.00 crore will be spent on the spacecraft. The cost includes development and fabrication of the spacecraft, including its specific payloads and technology elements, global ground station support costs for navigation and networks as well as the cost of the launch vehicle.

Notably, this mission will enable India to undertake future planetary missions with larger payloads, optimal orbit insertion approaches. There will be significant involvement of Indian industry during development of spacecraft and launch vehicle. Involvement of various academic institutions and training of students in pre-launch phase is also envisaged which includes design, development, testing, test data reduction, calibration etc. Through its unique instruments, this mission provides new and valuable science data to the Indian science community and thus opens up emerging and new opportunities.
