New Delhi witnessed a pivotal moment in bilateral ties as India and Sweden convened the eighth round of Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) on Thursday. The discussions underscored a shared commitment to deepening collaboration across critical domains including political engagement, trade and investment, defense and security, innovation, sustainability, and people-to-people connections.
Co-chaired by India’s Secretary (West) Siby George from the Ministry of External Affairs and Sweden’s State Secretary for Foreign Affairs Dag Hartelius, the meeting reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral relations. Both sides expressed unanimous resolve to fortify these ties amid evolving global dynamics.
Regional and global issues of mutual interest also featured prominently in the agenda. A key highlight was the emphasis on the recently concluded India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), hailed as a landmark that will usher in a new era of economic and commercial synergy, particularly boosting India-Sweden trade, investment, and technology partnerships.
This FOC builds on recent high-level interactions. Just a day prior, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Hartelius in New Delhi, deliberating ways to advance bilateral cooperation and strengthen the India-EU strategic partnership. Jaishankar noted the productive exchange on X, highlighting the focus on future-oriented collaboration.
Earlier in February, Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister Ebba Busch visited India for the AI Impact Summit 2026 preparations. During her trip, she engaged with Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, laying the groundwork for a robust telecom and digital partnership driven by innovation and stability.
The enduring India-Sweden relationship is characterized by regular political dialogues, burgeoning trade links, and joint efforts on global challenges and multilateral forums. As both nations navigate a complex world order, this FOC signals a proactive approach to mutual prosperity and security, promising enhanced strategic alignment in the years ahead.
