New Delhi witnessed a pivotal diplomatic exchange on Wednesday as President Droupadi Murmu hosted Spain’s Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares at Rashtrapati Bhavan. In a strong call to action, President Murmu emphasized that India and Spain should pool their resources to combat all forms of terrorism.

‘We stand united in our resolve to tackle this global menace,’ she declared, highlighting the shared commitment between the two nations. The meeting underscored the deep-rooted ties between India and Spain, forged over centuries through trade, culture, and common values of democracy and pluralism.

This year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations, celebrated as the ‘Year of Culture, Tourism, and Artificial Intelligence.’ President Murmu noted the burgeoning economic partnership, with expanding trade and investments in key sectors like engineering, railways, renewable energy, urban services, and defense-space collaboration.

Spain’s expertise aligns seamlessly with India’s development priorities, she added, expressing optimism that the impending India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will further bolster bilateral trade. As staunch multilateralists, both countries should collaborate on platforms like the UN and G20 to promote global peace, prosperity, and stability.

Terrorism remains a grave threat to international security, and President Murmu reiterated the need for a unified approach. ‘By combining our capabilities, we can effectively counter terrorism in all its manifestations,’ she stated.

Looking ahead, India anticipates strengthening ties with Europe, eagerly awaiting the visit of the European Council President and European Commission President as chief guests for its 77th Republic Day celebrations. This engagement signals a new chapter in Indo-Spanish relations, promising enhanced cooperation across multiple fronts.
