In a heartfelt address at Fiji’s Republic Day celebration, India’s High Commissioner Sunita Mehta reaffirmed India’s unwavering commitment to a prosperous partnership with Fiji and the broader Pacific region. Speaking at the Novotel Lami event on Friday night local time, Mehta highlighted the evolving bilateral ties grounded in trust, shared values, and people-to-people connections.

Mehta emphasized that India and Fiji are collaboratively shaping a future that delivers tangible benefits to their citizens. ‘Together, we will build a brighter, more prosperous, and inclusive future for our people,’ she declared, as reported by The Fiji Times.

Drawing on deep historical bonds, Mehta acknowledged the pivotal role of the Indo-Fijian community, descendants of 19th-century indentured laborers. This community has significantly contributed to Fiji’s social, cultural, and economic fabric, excelling in agriculture, trade, education, and public service.

The High Commissioner stressed that strengthening these multifaceted relations benefits not just both nations but the entire region and beyond. The event further solidified bonds of friendship, cooperation, and mutual values, according to the Indian High Commission in Suva.

Mehta described 2025 as a landmark year for India-Fiji relations, marked by sustained high-level political dialogue. Key visits included Fiji’s President Nikoiama Lalabalavu in November and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in August 2025, leading to significant agreements and a joint statement reiterating the ‘Velomani friendship’—a spirit of mutual respect.

Health cooperation emerged as a cornerstone of the partnership, with calls to expand collaboration in agriculture, education, defense, and capacity building. ‘India is committed to working with Fiji and other Pacific Island nations to promote sustainable development, resilience, and shared prosperity,’ Mehta affirmed.

This renewed pledge signals a new era of strategic collaboration, promising mutual growth and regional stability in the Pacific.
