New Delhi witnessed a significant diplomatic engagement on Monday when India’s Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan held talks with Guyana’s Vice President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo at the Vice President’s residence. The meeting focused on deepening bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, signaling a renewed commitment to fortify India-Guyana relations.
The two leaders delved into strategies for enhancing collaboration in diverse areas, emphasizing the need for stronger ties. They reaffirmed their dedication to amplifying the voice of the Global South on international platforms, including the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea.
In a post on X, the Vice President’s office highlighted the discussions, noting Dr. Jagdeo’s courtesy call. The Guyanese leader praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visionary leadership and India’s rapid strides in digital governance and financial inclusion through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Both sides explored the potential of adapting these Indian models in Guyana.
Interest was also expressed in India’s e-Migrate platform and the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program, underscoring Guyana’s eagerness to leverage India’s expertise in migration management and capacity building.
This meeting builds on recent goodwill gestures. Last month, Guyana’s President Irfaan Ali extended warm Republic Day wishes to PM Modi and the Indian people via X. He lauded India as the world’s largest democracy championing the interests of developing nations on the global stage.
Ali reflected on India’s independence struggle and its peaceful transition from colonial rule, which inspired many nations, including Guyana, to pursue sovereignty. He emphasized the deep historical bonds forged through shared history, blood relations, and mutual commitment to democracy and development.
‘Guyana proudly values its profound and historic relationship with India, which has evolved into a robust partnership based on mutual respect and cooperation across various sectors,’ Ali stated. As both nations look ahead, this interaction promises expanded collaboration, benefiting their peoples and contributing to a stronger Global South presence.
