New Delhi is set to host a pivotal defense dialogue between India and France, underscoring deepening military ties amid global security challenges. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will lead India’s delegation, joining his French counterpart for what promises to be a landmark meeting on February 17 in Bengaluru.

This sixth annual dialogue comes at a crucial juncture, with both nations prioritizing joint defense production and technology transfers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron will virtually inaugurate Tata-Airbus’s H125 helicopter assembly line in Vemgal, Karnataka, symbolizing India’s push towards self-reliance in aerospace manufacturing.

Discussions will cover a comprehensive review of defense cooperation, including potential extensions of key agreements for the next decade. Expectations are high for a pact on joint production of Hammer missiles, alongside announcements on cross-postings of military officers to foster interoperability.

India and France have long-standing defense partnerships, evidenced by joint exercises like Shakti, Varuna, and Garuda. Recent high-level exchanges, including Modi’s role as chief guest at France’s Bastille Day in 2023 and Macron’s presence at India’s Republic Day 2024, have elevated strategic bonds.

Adding momentum, the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) chaired by Rajnath Singh approved the procurement of additional Rafale fighter jets just days ago on February 12. This deal, alongside advanced combat missiles and high-altitude pseudo-satellites, bolsters the Indian Air Force’s capabilities. Rafale jets proved their mettle in Operation Sindoor last year, striking terrorist hideouts in Pakistan with precision from long range.

Crucially, most of these aircraft will be manufactured in India, aligning with the ‘Make in India’ initiative. With two Rafale squadrons already operational, this expansion ensures air superiority and technological edge. As France’s new Defense Minister Catherine Vautrin embarks on her first India visit post her October 2025 appointment, the dialogue signals a new chapter in Indo-French defense synergy.
