Mumbai’s business hub buzzed with promise on Saturday as top officials from India and Finland locked in a pivotal meeting to supercharge bilateral ties. Maharashtra’s Secretary for Industries, Energy, and Labour, Dr. P. Anbalagan, kicked off the discussions by painting a bright picture of collaboration ahead.

India is charging towards a $4 trillion economy, with annual growth pegged at 6.5-7%. The industrial sector chips in about 20% to the nation’s Gross Value Added (GVA), while services dominate at 53%. In Maharashtra, services pack an even bigger punch at 63%, backed by robust manufacturing clusters.

Dr. Anbalagan spotlighted the recent Free Trade Agreement (FTA) announcement, crediting Finland’s proactive stance for unlocking fresh trade avenues. Current exports from India to Finland stand at $413 million, with imports around $800 million. The goal? Double these figures under a bold new vision.

Maharashtra, boasting $70 billion in total exports, sees vast untapped potential with Finland. Talks zeroed in on high-impact areas like digitization, quantum technology, 5G/6G networks, sustainable development, and circular economy practices.

A standout highlight: negotiations with a major Finnish firm for a virgin fiber project. This initiative will transform textile waste into new fiber, backed by a whopping $1.5 billion investment in eastern Maharashtra.

FICCI Economist Forum Co-Chair Sachidanand Shukla noted major strides in January towards an India-Europe pact, ushering in a new era of trade cooperation. This deal promises access to a 2 billion-strong market, 25% of global GDP, and $24 trillion in trade.

Finland’s Employment Minister Matias Marttinen praised India’s impressive growth over the past 15 years. He hailed a fresh Mobility MoU as a game-changer, stressing integrated efforts in skills, industry, jobs, trade, and tech to fortify ties.

Long-time friends India and Finland are set to deepen partnerships in technology, business, skills, and manufacturing, fueled by recent pacts. This Mumbai summit marks a thrilling new chapter in their enduring alliance.
