New Delhi witnessed a significant diplomatic milestone as Finland’s President Alexander Stubb arrived on his first state visit to India from March 4 to 7, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit coincided with the 11th edition of the Raisina Dialogue 2026, where President Stubb served as the chief guest alongside PM Modi at the inaugural session.

Accompanied by a high-level ministerial delegation and a substantial business contingent, President Stubb’s tour underscores the mutual priority both nations place on trade, investment, and economic collaboration. Foreign Ministry officials, including Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal and Secretary (West) Siby George, briefed the media on the outcomes of these engagements.

Secretary George highlighted the deepening personal rapport between the leaders. Following Finnish PM Petteri Orpo’s recent visit for the AI Impact Summit, this trip builds on the momentum from India-Nordic Summits in 2018 and 2022. PM Modi and President Stubb met at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg last October and held at least two phone conversations throughout the year.

A key focus of discussions was Arctic cooperation, vital for both nations. The leaders reaffirmed commitments to joint research initiatives, academic exchanges, and capacity-building programs. They reflected on the inaugural India-Finland Arctic Dialogue in Finland, titled ‘The Himalayan and Arctic Ecosystem,’ which brought together parliamentarians, officials, academics, and experts to strategize deeper collaboration.

The conversations also emphasized advancing cooperation within the Arctic Council framework under the broader India-Nordic Summit umbrella, with an upcoming summit later this year. ‘Arctic matters emerged as a crucial component of the talks,’ George noted.

Beyond the Arctic, the leaders addressed pressing global issues, including the situation in West Asia. India has consistently expressed deep concern over the tensions, urging restraint and de-escalation, as reiterated by MEA spokespersons.

This visit marks a pivotal step in evolving India-Finland relations from technical partnerships to sustainable and strategic alliances, promising enhanced collaboration across multiple fronts.
