New Delhi witnessed a significant diplomatic engagement on Tuesday as India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Pavitra Margherita, held talks with Fiji’s Minister for Finance, Commerce, and Trade Development, Aserom Emanuel. The meeting delved into bolstering bilateral relations, aligning shared priorities, and exploring collaborative opportunities in digital infrastructure.
Margherita shared her enthusiasm on X, highlighting the productive discussion on India-Fiji ties. Key areas included development partnerships, capacity building, and digital infrastructure cooperation, encompassing ongoing initiatives and future roadmaps. This exchange underscores India’s commitment to deepening ties with Pacific nations.
Meanwhile, in Fiji, India’s High Commissioner Sunil Mehta met with Parliament Speaker Filimoni Jitoko on February 2. Their conversation focused on reinforcing parliamentary linkages and advancing bilateral cooperation. The Indian High Commission in Fiji posted on X about the honorable meeting, emphasizing commitments to stronger ties.
Earlier, on January 27, Mehta chaired the second meeting of the Project Steering Committee for the Quick Impact Project (QIP) ‘Tubalevu Ground Water Supply Project,’ supported by India. Representatives from Fiji’s government, foreign ministry, finance ministry, and public works ministry attended. On-site work has commenced, promising reliable water supply to Tubalevu residents and further solidifying India-Fiji relations.
Mehta’s prior meeting with Emanuel on January 19 also addressed strengthening relations in mutual interest areas. India-Fiji relations, rooted in mutual respect, cooperation, and robust people-to-people contacts, received a major boost following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Fiji in November 2014. That visit coincided with the inaugural Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) summit, marking a new era of engagement.
