Suva, Fiji – In a significant diplomatic engagement, India’s High Commissioner to Fiji, Sunil Mehta, held talks with Fiji’s Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Sakiasi Ditoka. The meeting focused on exploring innovative pathways to deepen cooperation in vital sectors of mutual interest.
The Indian High Commission in Fiji shared on X: ‘High Commissioner Sunil Mehta felt honored meeting Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka. The warm and substantive discussion reaffirmed the India-Fiji Veilomani friendship partnership and charted new avenues to bolster bilateral collaboration in areas of shared benefit.’
This comes amid a series of high-level interactions. Earlier this week, India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Pavitra Margherita, met Fiji’s Minister for Finance, Commerce, and Business Development, Aserom Emanuel, in New Delhi. Their discussions covered bilateral relations, shared priorities, and prospects for collaboration in digital infrastructure.
Margarita posted on X: ‘Delighted to meet Fiji’s Minister Aserom Emanuel this morning. Productive talks on all aspects of India-Fiji relations and shared priorities, with special focus on development partnership, capacity building, and digital infrastructure cooperation, including ongoing initiatives and future pathways.’
High Commissioner Mehta has been actively fostering ties. On February 2, he met Fiji Parliament Speaker Filimone Jitoko to discuss strengthening parliamentary relations and bilateral cooperation. The High Commission noted: ‘HC Sunil Mehta proud to meet Speaker Filimone Jitoko. Excellent discussions solidifying strong parliamentary ties and ways to advance cooperation between our nations.’
Previously, on January 19, Mehta engaged with Minister Aserom Emanuel to enhance relations in areas of mutual interest.
India-Fiji relations are rooted in mutual respect, collaboration, and strong people-to-people ties. The partnership gained momentum following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Fiji in November 2014, which hosted the first Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) meeting. In recent years, India has supported Fiji’s nation-building efforts in key sectors and capacity building.
These engagements signal a robust commitment to expanding the strategic partnership, promising mutual growth and regional stability in the Indo-Pacific.
