New Delhi is optimistic about deepening its multifaceted relationship with Bangladesh following the formation of a new government under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The Ministry of External Affairs announced that comprehensive discussions on all bilateral aspects, including visas, will be held with the new administration.
Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, during his weekly media briefing, highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s congratulations to Tarique Rahman after the elections. On February 17, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla represented India at the swearing-in ceremony in Dhaka, delivering a letter from PM Modi and holding bilateral talks with the new Bangladeshi Premier.
‘We look forward to strengthening our historic and warm relations with Bangladesh,’ Jaiswal stated. ‘India is eager to engage with the new government across all facets of our bilateral ties.’ Birla echoed this sentiment on social media, pledging India’s support for a democratic, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh.
During their meeting, Birla extended an invitation for Tarique Rahman to visit India and both leaders expressed optimism about joint efforts for the welfare of their peoples. Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, Riaz Hamidullah, shared that Tarique Rahman conveyed greetings to PM Modi, reaffirming commitment to a people-centric cooperation agenda.
Tarique Rahman, BNP chairperson, assumed office as Bangladesh’s 11th Prime Minister after his party’s decisive victory in the 13th parliamentary elections. This development marks a pivotal moment for India-Bangladesh relations, built on shared history and mutual interests. As both nations navigate regional challenges, enhanced collaboration promises mutual prosperity and stability.
