New Delhi witnessed a landmark moment in India-EU relations as President Droupadi Murmu warmly welcomed European Council President Antonio Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The high-profile visit coincided with India’s 77th Republic Day celebrations, marking the first time two top EU leaders served as joint chief guests.

President Murmu hosted a grand banquet in their honor, emphasizing shared values like democracy, pluralism, and open market economies. Official posts highlighted the significance of the India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with the President expressing confidence that it would usher in substantial positive transformations in the lives of people on both sides.

The leaders arrived together in a traditional buggy for the Republic Day parade, enjoying the spectacular display of military precision and cultural performances along Kartavya Path. At the subsequent ‘At Home’ reception and banquet, Costa and von der Leyen praised India’s legendary hospitality.

Costa shared his thoughts on X, thanking President Murmu for the warm welcome and noting that the EU-India Summit sent a clear global message: partnerships built on values, rules, and mutual interests are essential for shared prosperity and security. This engagement underscores deepening ties amid global challenges, with the FTA negotiations gaining renewed momentum.

As India and the EU navigate trade complexities, this visit signals a commitment to a robust economic partnership. Experts anticipate the FTA could boost bilateral trade significantly, creating jobs and enhancing consumer choices. The optimism expressed by President Murmu reflects a shared vision for a stronger, more interconnected future.
