India and Armenia are on the verge of concluding a colossal $3.5-4 billion arms agreement, a move that significantly alters the strategic landscape amid escalating tensions with Azerbaijan. This major defense deal will reportedly encompass advanced air defense solutions, cutting-edge missile technology, and crucial artillery, enhancing Armenia’s military strength and expanding India’s strategic reach in the South Caucasus region.

The Akash-NG, a next-generation missile system known for its superior range and interception capabilities, is a central element of the proposed deal. Its inclusion is expected to create a robust, multi-layered air defense system for Armenia.

Another highlight of Armenia’s interest is India’s formidable BrahMos supersonic cruise missile. This acquisition is anticipated to dramatically upgrade Armenia’s offensive and defensive capabilities. For India, this deal represents a significant stride in its defense export market and a validation of its indigenous defense manufacturing prowess under the ‘Make in India’ banner.

India has been supplying various advanced military equipment to Armenia since 2022, including the Pinaka rocket system and advanced artillery. The current negotiations are also exploring potential co-production opportunities for the highly sought-after BrahMos missile.

Armenia’s commitment to modernizing its military with Indian technology is evident. The nation has become a significant defense partner for India, marked by increased diplomatic and military exchanges. This defense collaboration signifies a new era of security cooperation, leveraging India’s advanced defense systems to meet Armenia’s critical security imperatives and underscoring India’s growing defense export capabilities globally.
