In Sochi, President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a ‘wise leader’ committed to his country’s well-being. He also highlighted the special connection between India and Russia. Putin referenced the announcement of a privileged strategic partnership made some fifteen years ago, which he viewed as the best description of their relationship. This comes before Putin’s planned visit to India later in the year, with preliminary meetings led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to prepare for the summit and discuss bilateral matters. Lavrov had previously mentioned the Russian President’s forthcoming visit to New Delhi at the UN General Assembly. Moreover, Putin addressed the implications of US tariffs on Indian imports. He suggested that if India stops purchasing Russian oil, it could face economic repercussions. However, Putin expressed faith in PM Modi’s ability to resist external pressure, backing India’s strategic autonomy. These statements were made after former US President Donald Trump had accused China and India of financing the Ukraine war through their continued purchase of Russian oil.
