Melbourne, February 12 – Israeli President Isaac Herzog wrapped up his four-day visit to Australia on a somber note. Speaking at a Jewish community event, he voiced deep disappointment over the heavy security measures and persistent protests that shadowed his trip.
Pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel demonstrators staged large rallies throughout Herzog’s stay. In Sydney, tensions escalated to the point where police deployed tear gas and rubber bullets, leading to multiple arrests. The tour was intended as a show of solidarity following the horrific terror shooting at a Hanukkah event on Bondi Beach in December, where gunmen killed 15 people.
In a statement released by his office, Herzog remarked, ‘It is strange and incomprehensible to me that so many police officers are needed for our protection. As proud Jews, gathering here is our birthright. It is odd that welcoming the president of the world’s only Jewish state requires such effort and trouble.’
He urged protesters to redirect their energy toward condemning Iran’s brutal crackdown on its own citizens last month, saying, ‘I tell all the protesters outside: demonstrate in front of the Iranian embassy. They killed their own people and spread lies against us.’
Despite the challenges, Herzog praised the resilience of Australian Jews, encouraging them to ‘wear your Zionism proudly and show no fear in declaring who you are.’ He also highlighted positive engagements with Australian leaders, describing them as ‘serious partners ready to confront vile rhetoric, misinformation, and antisemitism head-on.’
The visit underscored the growing tensions surrounding Israel in international forums, even in allied nations like Australia. As Herzog departed, his words lingered as a call for courage amid adversity.
