India has officially been recognized as the world’s third-largest military power, a significant geopolitical achievement highlighted in the 2025 Asia Power Index. This ranking reflects not only its military might but also its burgeoning role as a global defence exporter, with anticipated export revenues set to exceed Rs 30,000 crore in the upcoming fiscal year. The nation’s commitment to self-reliance, a core tenet of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign, has fueled advancements in indigenous technology and defence manufacturing. ‘Operation Sindoor’ served as a powerful showcase of India’s combat readiness and its sophisticated indigenous weapon systems, particularly in anti-drone capabilities. Over the past decade, defence exports have seen an exponential rise, nearing Rs 24,000 crore in 2024-25. The Ministry of Defence had designated 2025 as the year for critical reforms aimed at modernization and innovation. With a strategic vision to reach Rs 50,000 crore in exports by 2029, India is actively developing defence industrial corridors and fostering private sector participation. Future defence allocations are expected to increase substantially, likely by 20-25%, to bolster modernization efforts, including advancements in AI and autonomous systems, and to expand naval capabilities in the Indian Ocean region.
