Beijing, March 8 – In a significant address at the 14th National People’s Congress (NPC) fourth session press conference, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted the growing international support for President Xi Jinping’s Global Governance Initiative.
Wang Yi emphasized that the world today faces mounting global challenges, with governance deficits widening and multilateralism under severe strain. Launched at a critical juncture, the initiative has swiftly garnered endorsements from over 150 countries and international organizations.
A key development is the formation of the ‘Group of Friends of Global Governance,’ established at UN headquarters in New York and Geneva. This platform has seen enthusiastic participation, particularly from Global South nations, underscoring a collective push for reformed global governance.
The minister stressed that the initiative’s core message is unequivocal: the UN’s leading role must be upheld and strengthened, not undermined. As a founding member and staunch supporter of the United Nations, China is acutely aware of the high expectations from the Global South.
Organizations like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and BRICS, in which China plays a pivotal role, adhere strictly to the UN Charter. These groups offer valuable insights into improving and fortifying the global governance system.
Wang Yi called on more countries to join the initiative, collaborate to revitalize, safeguard, and empower the United Nations for a more equitable world order.
