In a tragic incident that has shocked the Indian community in the United States, a shooting in Georgia claimed four lives, one of whom was an Indian national. The Consulate General of India in Atlanta expressed profound grief over the matter and pledged full support to the bereaved family.
The violence unfolded early morning in the Brook Ivy Court area, where police responded to reports of gunfire around 2:30 AM. Upon arrival, officers discovered four individuals inside a residence, all critically wounded. Despite medical efforts, they succumbed to their injuries. Initial investigations point to a domestic dispute as the trigger.
Remarkably, three young children were present during the chaos. Displaying incredible bravery, they barricaded themselves in a closet and one of them alerted authorities. This quick action enabled a swift police response. Fearing the shooter might still be at large within the premises, K-9 units were deployed for a thorough search.
The search led to a nearby wooded area where a police dog tracked down the suspect. The 51-year-old Vijay Kumar from Atlanta was taken into custody without further incident. The victims have been identified as Meemu Dogra, 43, wife of the suspect; Gaurav Kumar, 33; Nidhi Chandar, 37; and Harish Chandar, 38—all residents of Lawrenceville.
According to police, the altercation began between Vijay Kumar and Meemu Dogra at their Atlanta home. The couple, along with their 12-year-old child, then proceeded to the Brook Ivy Court address where the shooting occurred. Thankfully, none of the children sustained injuries and were later placed under the care of a family member.
The Indian Consulate took to social media platform X to convey their condolences, noting the incident’s connection to a family dispute and assuring assistance to the affected families.
