New Delhi witnessed a significant diplomatic milestone as Finland’s President Alexander Stubb arrived for a three-day visit to India. Kicking off his itinerary, President Stubb attended the 11th Raisina Dialogue as the chief guest, engaging in high-level discussions on global affairs.

Following his Delhi engagements, President Stubb traveled to Maharashtra, where he held talks with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The highlight of the visit was the signing of a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Maharashtra government and Finnish representatives for the transformation of Sassoon Docks Fishing Harbor in Mumbai.

The agreement, inked in the presence of Maharashtra Minister Nitesh Rane, Finland’s Foreign Ministry Permanent State Secretary Jukka Salovaara, and Consul General Erik F. Hällström, opens doors for Finnish companies to upgrade the harbor into a world-class, clean, efficient, and sustainable facility. Both sides committed to regular reviews of development progress and exploring further collaboration opportunities.

This MoU comes on the heels of President Stubb’s bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Several agreements were signed, strengthening India-Finland ties across multiple sectors. In a joint statement, President Stubb praised PM Modi’s diplomatic acumen, calling India ‘one of the world’s largest and most influential countries and the biggest democracy.’

He highlighted India’s role as a key strategic partner for Europe and one of the fastest-growing economies. ‘Your foreign policy stands out for its realism and pragmatism,’ Stubb noted, adding, ‘The world could use a bit more of India’s approach – strategic autonomy alongside multilateralism.’

Discussing evolving global dynamics, Stubb emphasized India’s leadership within the Global South in shaping the future world order. Conversations touched on regional security, defense cooperation, West Asia, and the Ukraine conflict. Both leaders agreed that ending wars serves everyone’s interests, with lasting peace dependent on upholding UN principles.

The Sassoon Docks project symbolizes deepening economic ties between India and Finland, promising job creation, technological advancement, and sustainable fisheries development in Mumbai. As bilateral relations flourish, this partnership sets a template for future collaborations in infrastructure and green technology.
