Discussions surrounding the 2026 FIFA World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, took a turn when former U.S. President Donald Trump hinted at Vladimir Putin’s potential attendance. Trump met with FIFA President Gianni Infantino to review preparations for the tournament. This edition of the World Cup is slated to be the biggest yet, with 48 participating teams. Trump presented a photo of himself and Putin taken in Alaska. Trump stated that Putin’s attendance was a possibility, noting, “I believe he (Putin) will be coming (to the 2026 FIFA World Cup), depending on what happens. He’s been very respectful of me and of our country but not so respectful of others.” These comments were made as Trump expressed his concern regarding the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, suggesting its next phase could be critical. Amidst the serious political backdrop, the meeting also included lighter moments, with Trump playfully inquiring about the chances of the U.S. team and making a joke about possessing the trophy. The 2026 World Cup marks a milestone as the first to be hosted by three countries, featuring an expanded format. The official draw will be held in Washington this December. The 1994 World Cup, which the United States hosted, significantly increased soccer’s popularity in North America. The 2026 tournament is expected to generate significant global interest.
