Speculation regarding India’s recognition of Somaliland has been put to rest by the Ministry of External Affairs. Following Israel’s recent decision to recognize the self-declared state, rumors began to swirl that India would be the next major power to do so. These claims were primarily fueled by a social media post asserting that Indian policy strategists prioritize access to the Berbera Port and Ethiopia to maintain a maritime edge.
However, the Indian government has issued a clear warning against these misleading viral posts. Somaliland has functioned as an independent entity for over 30 years since the fall of dictator Siad Barre in 1991. Despite its stable population of 6.2 million and strategic location, the international community remains divided. While Israel has moved forward with recognition, dozens of other nations, including many in the Arab world, continue to oppose the move.
