The European Union has responded to the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska by reaffirming its commitment to supporting Ukraine. The EU is ready to provide security guarantees to Ukraine and will not recognize any changes to its borders imposed by force. The joint statement, which was issued by leading EU figures, said that President Trump informed them and President Zelensky about his meeting with the Russian President. The leaders praised Trump’s efforts to end the war, prevent further killings, and establish a just and lasting peace. The EU supports Trump’s approach that no deal will be made until an agreement is reached. The EU is prepared to work with Trump and Zelensky on a trilateral summit. The EU emphasized that Ukraine requires strong security guarantees to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity, also supporting Trump’s willingness to provide these guarantees. There should be no restrictions on Ukraine’s armed forces or their alliances with other countries, and Russia should not have any veto power over Ukraine’s path towards the EU and NATO. The statement also highlighted that Ukraine will make its own decisions regarding its territory, and international borders cannot be altered by force. The EU will continue its support for Ukraine, including efforts to achieve lasting peace and security. The EU will maintain pressure on Russia through sanctions until a just and lasting peace is reached. The EU pledged to work towards a peace that protects the security interests of Ukraine and Europe.
