Former US President Donald Trump made a striking assertion about the future of India-Pakistan relations during an international peace summit in Egypt, stating, “I think Pakistan and India are going to live very nicely together.” This optimistic outlook was shared in the presence of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who appeared receptive to the comment. The summit, focused on the Gaza conflict and broader Middle Eastern stability, provided a platform for leaders to discuss critical issues. Trump also singled out Pakistan’s military chief, referring to him as his “favorite field marshal,” and invited Prime Minister Sharif to address the gathering, highlighting Pakistan’s role in regional diplomacy. India’s special envoy, Minister of State Kirti Vardhan Singh, met with Trump to discuss India’s active support for humanitarian efforts in Gaza and its commitment to peace initiatives. This statement from Trump occurs against a backdrop of persistent tensions between India and Pakistan, particularly along the Line of Control in Kashmir, with recent security incidents further complicating the relationship. The summit itself, co-chaired by Egypt’s President El-Sissi and Trump, aimed to secure ceasefires and humanitarian corridors for Gaza. President El-Sissi acknowledged Trump’s Middle East peace plan as a pivotal opportunity. Trump was subsequently awarded Egypt’s highest honor, the Order of the Nile, for his summit participation.
