The recent viral circulation of Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s remarks about Dubai’s interest in his expertise highlights the attention on the city’s infrastructure. The report that Dubai’s Crown Prince sought Gadkari’s contributions has spurred public interest in Dubai’s road systems.

Dubai’s Roads: Designed for Safety and Convenience

Dubai’s commitment to pedestrian and cyclist safety goes beyond merely creating wide, modern roads. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has invested in infrastructure like pedestrian bridges.

    Infrastructure Development

The city has dramatically increased the number of pedestrian bridges and underpasses since 2006, with a 581% increase. Construction of new bridges is ongoing, aiming for a total of 23 more by 2030. These bridges provide connections between residential areas and key destinations, encouraging walking and cycling.

    Impact of Road Safety Measures

The RTA reports a considerable decline in fatalities. Pedestrian deaths have dropped significantly from 9.5 per 100,000 people in 2007 to 0.3 in 2024. Pedestrian satisfaction has also increased. Walking is becoming more popular, with a noticeable rise in pedestrian trips.

    Bridge Design and Technological Features

The bridges have been designed for safety and are visually appealing. They incorporate advanced technologies, including elevators, remote monitoring, and fire alarms. These bridges showcase innovative designs, such as those inspired by the sun’s rays, and offer accessibility to cultural locations.

    Dubai’s Zero Fatalities Initiative

Dubai’s goal is to eliminate road fatalities by providing safe routes, dedicated bridges, and promoting cycling and e-scooter usage.

    Road Smoothness through Smart Technology

Dubai employs advanced technology, including AI and laser systems, to maintain its road quality. Specialized vehicles are used to detect road imperfections using lasers, and a high-precision system measures road smoothness using the International Roughness Index (IRI). Dubai’s IRI score of 0.9 reflects some of the smoothest road surfaces in the world.

    Commitment to Cleanliness

Dubai is recognized as a world leader in cleanliness. Over 3,200 cleaning engineers and supervisors work to maintain roads, investment zones, and waterways. This dedication results in roads that are smooth, safe, and exceptionally clean.
