The Indian government is actively pursuing the repatriation of Ariha Shah, a young Indian girl currently in German foster care. The issue was raised by Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar during talks with German Foreign Minister Johann Wedphul, emphasizing the importance of protecting Ariha’s cultural identity. The child, separated from her parents, Dhara and Bhavesh Shah, due to an injury, has been in the care of German authorities for nearly four years. The Indian government has repeatedly requested her return, emphasizing the benefits of raising her in her home country, where her cultural and social rights can be better preserved. The Indian Embassy in Berlin has also sought cultural and consular access. The Ministry of External Affairs has expressed worries over the impact of her current living situation on her emotional and mental development, advocating for her return. The parents, facing challenges related to their visas and the legal process, are deeply concerned for Ariha’s safety and well-being, actively seeking to regain custody.
