Legal challenges to the Trump administration’s immigration policies continue, with a recent court ruling restricting the scope of expedited deportations. This decision represents a significant hurdle to the former president’s plan to deport a large number of undocumented immigrants, highlighting the importance of due process in immigration cases. The focus of the legal action was the administration’s expansion of expedited deportation procedures, which were previously limited to migrants apprehended near the Mexican border who had recently entered the US. The implementation of this policy nationwide, and its application to migrants who had been in the country for up to two years, was blocked by US District Judge Zia Cobb. Judge Cobb argued the expanded process could lead to the unjust deportation of individuals, especially those unable to access the full legal protections available. The judge referenced the US Constitution, and the Fifth Amendment, in the ruling.
