Opposition groups, including former Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy, have announced a boycott of the elections. They believe these elections are merely a pretense to strengthen the grip on power of Min Aung Hlaing. Emergency rule has been in place since 2021. The last elections in Myanmar were held in November 2020. After the situation in the country deteriorated, the army arrested Aung San Suu Kyi and imposed an emergency. Since the coup, Myanmar has been struggling with civil war, with various rebel groups controlling large parts of the country, including the People’s Defense Force, the Arakan Army, and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army.
