Beijing has marked a significant milestone in the advancement of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) during the 14th Five-Year Plan period. Authorities have issued 34 new national standards for TCM, expanding the total count to 36. This development was highlighted at the 2025 annual meeting of the Chinese National Technical Committee on TCM Standardization, held on January 24.

These standards serve as a crucial technical foundation, broadening the scope of TCM practices and enhancing their global influence. The committee has meticulously developed a comprehensive ‘National Standards System Table’ that encompasses clinical practices, basic research, minority ethnic medical traditions, herbal medicine production, and information management.

The initiative reflects China’s commitment to modernizing TCM while preserving its rich heritage. As standardization efforts intensify, TCM is poised to play a larger role in both domestic healthcare and international wellness landscapes. Experts anticipate these standards will streamline quality control, foster innovation, and boost TCM’s credibility worldwide.

Looking ahead, the committee plans further refinements to ensure these standards adapt to emerging challenges in healthcare. This structured approach not only strengthens TCM’s scientific basis but also positions it as a competitive force in global alternative medicine.
