China’s foreign policy is focusing on fostering better ties between India and Pakistan, with Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s recent visit to India serving as a backdrop for these diplomatic efforts. Yi engaged in discussions with Indian officials, highlighting the importance of regional stability. China views both India and Pakistan as vital neighboring countries, and seeks amicable relationships with both. The Chinese Foreign Ministry indicated that any disputes between India and Pakistan should be addressed through mutual discussions, with China prepared to act as a mediator if both nations are willing. This represents a significant shift from China’s previous alignment with Pakistan during past conflicts. Pakistan is a key ally and partner in China’s Belt and Road Initiative. This initiative comes at a time when India has not sought assistance from the United States. Improved relations between India and Pakistan could potentially lead to greater regional stability and economic cooperation, offering benefits such as increased trade and reduced tensions if Pakistan ceases support for terrorist groups and hostile actions. Furthermore, it could allow India to engage in direct trade with Iran and Afghanistan, facilitated by Pakistan.
