Beijing’s energy sector marked a monumental achievement in 2025, issuing more than 2.9 billion green energy certificates, according to data released by the National Energy Administration on Thursday. This surge underscores China’s unwavering commitment to expanding renewable energy production and consumption, positioning the country as a global leader in sustainable power.
The total issuance reached 2.0947 billion certificates, with 1.893 billion designated as tradable. In December alone, 211 million certificates were released, where tradable ones accounted for 71.32% of the total. This robust output reflects accelerating momentum in the green energy market.
Trading activity was equally impressive, with 930 million certificates exchanged nationwide throughout the year, including 250 million linked to green electricity businesses. These certificates serve as digital proof of renewable energy generation, each representing 1,000 kilowatt-hours from sources like wind, solar, and hydro.
Experts highlight that this rapid growth in issuance and trading signals deeper integration of renewables into China’s energy grid. As the nation phases out coal dependency, these certificates play a pivotal role in verifying clean energy claims and incentivizing further investments. Looking ahead, this trajectory promises even greater strides toward carbon neutrality by 2060, bolstering global climate efforts.
