Beijing, March 3 – China has achieved a monumental milestone in global energy transition. According to the National Energy Administration’s latest data, the country’s total installed renewable energy capacity has surged to 2.34 billion kilowatts by the end of 2025. During the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), China constructed the world’s largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system, with renewables’ share in the energy mix jumping from 40% to nearly 60%.

President Xi Jinping has emphasized that energy security is intrinsically linked to economic and social development. He urged seizing opportunities to promote high-quality development in new energy sectors. This vision has materialized through unprecedented advancements in 2025 across three key areas.

First, the combined installed capacity of wind and solar power has historically surpassed thermal power, escalating from 530 million kilowatts in 2020 to 1.84 billion kilowatts in 2025. Second, new energy storage capacity has crossed the 100 million kilowatt mark for the first time, accounting for over 40% of the global total. Third, annual trading volume of renewable energy green certificates has exceeded the cumulative total from previous years.

The 14th Five-Year Plan period witnessed a leapfrog development in China’s new energy landscape. Massive wind and solar bases in desert regions were established, adding over 130 million kilowatts of new capacity. Currently, green electricity constitutes about 40% of China’s total power consumption. The nation has also championed green vehicles and electricity usage, building the world’s largest electric vehicle charging network.

Improvements in green certificate and green power trading mechanisms have steadily boosted demand for clean energy. By erecting the world’s premier renewable energy system, China has made substantial contributions to the global clean energy transformation. During this period, exported wind and solar products from China helped reduce nearly 410 million tons of carbon emissions in other countries.

This achievement not only secures China’s energy future but also sets a benchmark for sustainable development worldwide, inspiring nations to accelerate their green transitions.
