Beijing is ramping up efforts to dominate the future of electric vehicles. At a key inter-ministerial conference on energy-saving and new energy vehicles held recently in Peiching, officials outlined ambitious plans for 2026 and beyond.

A senior official from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology emphasized the need to boost self-reliance in industrial and supply chains. The focus is on achieving breakthroughs in all-solid-state batteries and high-level autonomous driving systems. These technologies promise to revolutionize transportation by enhancing safety, efficiency, and range.

During the 14th Five-Year Plan period, China’s new energy vehicle market exploded in size, growing 3.6 times over. Battery cell costs dropped by 30 percent, lifespan extended by 40 percent, and charging speeds more than tripled. These advancements have solidified China’s lead in global competition.

As 2026 marks the start of the 15th Five-Year Plan, the intelligent connected new energy vehicle sector stands at a pivotal juncture. Stronger collaboration across ministries, refined implementation strategies, and a push for high-quality industrial growth are top priorities. Industry leaders are calling for integrated efforts to overcome challenges and seize opportunities in this dynamic field.

The conference highlighted how these innovations align with national goals for sustainable development. With government backing and technological prowess, China aims to set new global standards in EV innovation.
