New Delhi’s fight against corruption took a decisive turn as the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a peon-cum-assistant meter reader from the Delhi Jal Board’s Seelampur office. The official, identified as Vinod Kumar, was caught red-handed along with his associate Nitin Kumar while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 6,500 from a complainant.
The operation stemmed from a written complaint received on February 8, detailing how Vinod Kumar had initially pocketed Rs 5,500 from the resident on February 3. The demand was for waiving off and correcting a pending water bill at the complainant’s home, with the total bribe fixed at Rs 12,000. Acting swiftly, CBI laid a trap on February 9, leading to the dramatic arrests.
Both accused are now in custody, undergoing intense interrogation to uncover the full extent of their corrupt practices. This bust underscores the CBI’s unwavering commitment to rooting out bribery within government departments, particularly those serving essential public utilities like water supply.
In a public appeal, the agency urged citizens to report any instances of graft by officials without hesitation. Contact points include the CBI ACB Delhi office at CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, or via phone at 011-24367887 and 9650394847.
This arrest follows a similar high-profile catch involving a Delhi Police ASI, nabbed for demanding a hefty sum to settle a case. Such actions signal a broader crackdown, reassuring Delhiites that accountability is finally catching up with the corrupt.
