India has conveyed its worries to China regarding the construction of a large-scale dam on the Brahmaputra River in the lower reaches, recognizing the potential consequences for nations located downstream. These concerns were voiced by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar during a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Monday. The Chinese Foreign Minister’s visit was part of a two-day official visit to India, hosted at the invitation of National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. The discussions between the representatives covered matters of de-escalation, boundary questions, and other important issues of common interest. India strongly brought up the issue of terrorism in all forms, including cross-border terrorism, which the Chinese Foreign Minister agreed should be given the highest priority. The Indian side also raised concerns regarding the mega dam construction by China in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) river, stressing the need for transparency. India also reiterated its stance on Taiwan and highlighted its focus on existing ties. The Indian government has been closely monitoring the developments related to the Brahmaputra river, including China’s hydropower projects, and is taking necessary measures to protect Indian interests. Issues related to trans-border rivers are discussed through an established Expert Level Mechanism and diplomatic channels. The issue was also addressed during a visit to Beijing, where India and China agreed to an early meeting to discuss the resumption of hydrological data and cooperation on trans-border rivers.
