New Delhi has named Anita Shukla, a 2006-batch Indian Foreign Service officer, as India’s next Ambassador to the Republic of Ecuador. The Ministry of External Affairs made the official announcement, marking a significant step in bolstering bilateral ties.

Currently serving as Joint Secretary in the foreign ministry, Shukla brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She is expected to assume charge shortly, steering India’s diplomatic engagement in South America.

Shukla’s illustrious career includes her tenure as Director for Foreigners Training and Non-Representational Grade at the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service. There, she oversaw critical training programs for foreign diplomats and non-representational cadres, ensuring India’s diplomatic corps remained sharp and adaptable.

Her leadership shone in spearheading international delegations, notably organizing the first special course for diplomats from Central and South America and the Caribbean Islands by late 2025. This initiative underscored India’s growing influence in the region.

Previously, Shukla served as Counselor for Political, Press, and Information at the Indian Embassy in Stockholm. During her stint in Sweden, she adeptly handled the responsibilities of Charge d’Affaires, navigating complex geopolitical landscapes with finesse.

India and Ecuador established diplomatic relations in 1969, laying the foundation for cooperation. A major milestone came in November 2025 with the inauguration of India’s permanent embassy in Quito, Ecuador’s capital. This move, led by Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita during his visit from November 4 to 10, 2025, also saw the opening of a new embassy in Bolivia.

The visit yielded a Memorandum of Understanding on collaboration between Indian and Ecuadorian diplomatic training institutes. It further extended invitations for Ecuadorian candidates to utilize ITEC training slots in digital, AI, science, and technology fields.

Both nations agreed to hold the next Foreign Office Consultation in India during the first half of 2026. Margherita also paid floral tributes at the Heroes’ Memorial in Quito and engaged with business leaders and the Indian community, fostering stronger people-to-people ties.

Shukla’s appointment comes at a pivotal time, poised to elevate India-Ecuador relations across trade, technology, and diplomacy.
