Afghanistan was struck by another earthquake on Thursday, measuring 4.8 in magnitude, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The quake’s epicenter was at a depth of 135km. Preceding this, a separate earthquake hit late Wednesday night, with a shallow depth of 10km. Because of their proximity to the surface, shallow earthquakes can cause greater damage. The World Food Programme (WFP) is providing emergency aid to the affected provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, where the earthquake has resulted in over 1,400 fatalities and more than 3,000 injuries. The aid includes food and high-energy biscuits, and more assistance is in the works. Blocked roads and difficult terrain are hindering rescue operations. India has provided 21 tonnes of relief materials, including blankets, tents, hygiene kits, and medical supplies, which have been delivered by air to Kabul.
