The earthquake that struck Afghanistan has caused a devastating loss of life, with the death toll surpassing 1,400 as of Tuesday. Thousands more have sustained injuries. The initial earthquake on Monday in eastern Afghanistan claimed over 800 lives and injured more than 2,800. Rescue operations are underway, however, the rugged geography is presenting significant challenges in reaching affected communities. The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that a powerful 6.3 magnitude earthquake occurred on Monday morning, with tremors felt throughout the region, including Pakistan. Aftershocks, ranging from 4 to 5 in magnitude, followed the initial quake.
In response to the disaster, India is providing humanitarian assistance. The Ministry of External Affairs announced its support for relief efforts, sharing images of aid deliveries. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed his condolences in a conversation with Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, assuring him of India’s backing. India has already delivered vital supplies, including tents and food, and will continue to provide more aid. India stands with Afghanistan during this time of need.
