A person got death sentence in Saudi Arabia, people of Kerala collected Rs 34 crore as ‘blood money’, Abdul Rahim will now be released after 18 years

Kerala. Malayalees across the country and the world have come together to demand the release of Indian man Abdul Rahim, who has been awarded death sentence for murder in Saudi Arabia. They have collected an amount of Rs 35.45 crore to give as ‘blood money’ to the family of the deceased. If he gives this money to the victim’s family before April 18, then the Saudi government will release Rahim. Let us tell you that Abdul Rahim is a native of Kozhikode. He has been imprisoned in Saudi Arabia for more than 18 years.

Why was Abdul Rahim given death sentence?

Let us tell you that Abdul Rahim used to take care of a disabled boy in UAE. Abdul Rahim had accidentally removed the boy’s life support equipment, resulting in his death. Rahim was accused of murder and was jailed in 2006. The boy’s family refused to forgive Abdul Rahim. After this, in the year 2018, he was sentenced to death by the Saudi court. However, the victim’s family initially insisted on the death penalty but later agreed to forgive Abdul Rahim. However, he put a condition that if Abdul Rahim gives 15 million Saudi Riyals as blood money, then he should be released.

‘SAVEABDULRAHIM’ app launched for crowd funding

Rahim’s family did not have that much money. He appealed to the people, later with the help of some people decided to do crowd funding. After this, a Legal Action Committee was formed to get Abdul Rahim released. An app was launched named ‘SAVEABDULRAHIM’. Rs 30 crore was collected through this app. Apart from this, some money was also found offline. The committee says that it will contact the Indian Embassy and ensure the release of Abdul Rahim before the 15th.

To avoid punishment, Rahim has to pay around Rs 34 crore as ‘blood money’ before April 18. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan praised the efforts of the Malayali community, saying, ‘When preachers of hate spread lies against the state, Malayalis are defending themselves through stories of humanity and charity. After hearing the news of Abdul Rahim’s release, his mother Fatima expressed gratitude, saying, ‘People’s harmony has helped in the effort to save my son. I have not been able to see him for the last 18 years. Even when he calls, I am unable to speak.

What is blood money?

Blood money means payment of money to the victim’s family to avoid punishment. Meaning, in a murder case, this compensation is given to the victim’s family by the guilty person. This compensation is called blood money. The person who commits the murder gives blood money to the victim’s family. In exchange for this blood money, the victim’s family forgives the punishment of the culprit. This blood money is given only when the victim agrees to take it willingly and is willing to forgive.
