A strong 7.0 magnitude earthquake shook Taiwan on Saturday night, with its effects felt across the entire island. The tremor originated near the northeastern coastal city of Yilan at 11:05 PM local time, according to the Central Weather Bureau. The seismic waves caused noticeable shaking in the capital, Taipei, where buildings swayed. The epicenter was located at a depth of approximately 72.8 kilometers. Taiwan’s National Fire Agency is undertaking a comprehensive damage assessment. Recognizing the potential risks, especially during nighttime hours, the agency issued immediate safety advice via X, instructing citizens on protective actions, the importance of having emergency supplies like a flashlight and shoes by the bedside, and urging patience until shaking subsides. Fortunately, preliminary reports from the Taipei city government suggest no immediate injuries or damage. Taiwan’s geographic position in a highly active tectonic region makes it susceptible to such seismic events, with a history marked by severe earthquakes in recent decades.
