Emirates Airlines has implemented a ban on the use of power banks during flights. This decision has been met with surprise, as many passengers rely on these devices to charge their electronics while traveling. The policy has prompted inquiries into the underlying causes.
The new Emirates policy permits passengers to carry a single power bank, provided it is less than 100 watt-hours (Wh). It is important for the capacity to be clearly stated on the power bank. Despite being allowed on the flight, power banks cannot be used.
The restrictions on power banks are primarily due to safety concerns. Power banks utilize lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries, which can overheat and potentially cause fires. This can happen through thermal runaway, a situation where the battery’s temperature increases, leading to fire or explosion.
The airline’s action aims to minimize the risk of battery-related incidents on airplanes, particularly those associated with cheaper power banks without safety mechanisms. Emirates Airlines has implemented this measure to ensure the safety of its passengers. Passengers are advised to fully charge their phones and other gadgets before they head to the airport.
