WhatsApp is adding several new features to its platform, including Channel Subscriptions, Promoted Channels, and Status Ads. These features are designed to help businesses and channel administrators reach more users and monetize their content. The new features, launching on June 16, are part of WhatsApp’s Updates tab, which is used by 1.5 billion users daily.

Channel Subscriptions will allow channel admins to charge followers for exclusive updates. This creates a way for creators and organizations to generate revenue. A diamond icon will signify premium content. Admins set the monthly subscription price and the subscription duration is for 30 days. This allows fans to get more from their favourite channels and also allows creators to make money inside the app.

Promoted Channels provides admins with the option to advertise their channels inside WhatsApp’s directory. This will help new channels and those looking to expand their reach.

Ads will also be introduced into the Status section, enabling businesses to display product or offer information. Users can interact with the business through these ads. WhatsApp says that all ads will only appear in the Updates tab, leaving personal chats, group messages, and calls untouched and free of ads.

WhatsApp reiterates that personal chats, calls and statuses remain end-to-end encrypted, and that it will not sell or share user numbers with advertisers. Ad targeting will use basic info such as city, language, or channels followed. Users who have linked WhatsApp with Meta’s Accounts Center may also see some ad preferences from other Meta apps used. The new additions for the Updates tab extends the Meta Verified model but for creators and public channels. The features will gradually roll out globally over the next few weeks.
