Vodafone Idea (Vi) has partnered with AST SpaceMobile to bring direct-to-cell satellite-based mobile broadband technology to India. This partnership places Vi in the satellite communication landscape alongside Airtel and Jio. The primary aim is to enhance mobile broadband services in rural and remote regions currently underserved by traditional cellular networks.
Vi and AST SpaceMobile will collaborate on terrestrial network integration, spectrum access, and market access, with AST SpaceMobile handling the satellite system’s development and operation. This initiative is expected to create advancements in areas like emergency response, disaster management, and agriculture, supporting the Digital India initiative.
