As geopolitical tensions escalate across the Middle East, hundreds of South Korean tourists stranded in the region are making their way back home, thanks to hastily arranged alternative flights. The situation has prompted travel agencies to scramble for solutions, ensuring the safe return of their clients from hotspots like Dubai.

Industry insiders report that over 400 South Korean travelers were stuck in Dubai as of Wednesday. Major operators such as Hana Tour, Mode Tour, and Yellow Balloon Tour accounted for the bulk, with 150, 190, and 70 customers respectively. Yonhap News Agency highlighted the urgency of the evacuations.

Hana Tour confirmed that 40 of its clients departed Dubai earlier in the day, expected to land in South Korea late Thursday. Mode Tour mirrored these efforts, securing alternative flights for 39 passengers heading to Incheon International Airport. Despite these movements, around 330 tourists remain in Dubai, with companies assuring their ongoing safety.

Travel firms emphasized that clients in other Middle Eastern destinations, including Cairo and Amman, are returning without major hitches. A Hana Tour spokesperson noted smooth repatriations from Cairo, while Yellow Balloon Tour is finalizing end-of-week flights for groups in Cairo and Jordan’s capital.

The crisis extends beyond tourism. Han Ji-young-ae, chair of the National Assembly’s policy committee from the ruling Democratic Party, warned of severe economic repercussions. South Korea’s exports to key Middle Eastern nations, valued at 200 trillion won (approximately $136.7 billion) last year, face immediate threats.

‘We cannot ignore the risk to nearly 100 trillion won in projects,’ Han stated during a meeting with Democratic lawmakers. These initiatives span smart cities, nuclear power plants, and AI data centers—cornerstones of future growth now vulnerable to delays or cancellations amid the unrest.

Triggered by recent U.S.-Israel strikes on Iran, the government is preparing a 100 trillion won market stabilization package to cushion potential fallout. As tourists trickle home and economists brace for impacts, South Korea watches the volatile region with growing concern, balancing immediate relief with long-term strategic planning.
