New Delhi’s diplomatic corridors buzzed with activity as Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal held key meetings with top US officials on Monday. In the midst of intensifying India-US bilateral trade negotiations, Goyal sat down with US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti and Senator Steve Daines.

The discussions, described by Goyal as ‘meaningful,’ delved deep into strengthening ties between the two nations. Posting on X, Goyal expressed delight at reconnecting with his ‘good friends,’ highlighting a productive exchange of ideas on bilateral relations.

This comes at a pivotal time. Ambassador Garcetti recently emphasized the active engagement in trade talks while underscoring collaboration in security, counter-terrorism, energy, technology, education, and health. Meanwhile, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal revealed that the first phase of the India-US trade deal is nearing completion, though no firm timeline has been set.

Just weeks ago, Goyal and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer conducted a virtual meeting, with teams working tirelessly towards consensus. India’s trade diplomacy extends beyond the US, with ongoing FTA negotiations with multiple partners, including the European Union.

The India-EU FTA talks are in advanced stages, with 20 of 24 chapters finalized. Top EU leaders—European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen—are set to visit India from January 25-27 as chief guests for the 77th Republic Day celebrations. A summit the following day could iron out remaining issues.

These developments signal a robust push by India to bolster economic partnerships globally, positioning the country as a key player in international trade amid geopolitical shifts.
