A village in Kerala is setting a precedent in weather monitoring by employing an automatic weather station to provide localized weather information, a departure from relying on standard weather apps. This system is pivotal in delivering real-time updates on weather conditions. Before heading to work, local resident Anil T.R. checks the weather information from the village’s automatic weather station. The village utilizes a ‘Living Lab’ approach which promotes solutions to real-world problems through research and innovation.
The weather station plays a vital role, particularly after the 2022 landslide, which caused fatalities and significant damage. Residents receive critical alerts, especially regarding potential heavy rainfall, enhancing their preparedness for adverse conditions. The panchayat plans to expand this initiative by installing more stations. Moreover, IIT-Roorkee is contributing an early warning system for landslides. Following the landslide, the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) initiated an investigation which lead to the implementation of the ‘Living Lab’ approach.
Residents have access to weather data, including precipitation, wind speed and temperature, via a provided link, which they share via a dedicated WhatsApp group. The Living Lab has also familiarized them with vital emergency procedures.
