In a landmark move towards sustainable rail transport, Indian Railways has rolled out the country’s inaugural Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) powered passenger train in Ahmedabad. This pioneering initiative marks a significant shift from traditional diesel operations, promising enhanced efficiency and reduced environmental impact.

Officials confirmed on Friday that after rigorous testing, the train has entered regular service. Equipped with a single tank, it boasts an impressive range of up to 2,200 kilometers, making it a reliable option for long-distance travel.

The LNG-based dual-fuel train underwent thorough inspection at the Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot by Ahmedabad Division Railway Manager Ved Prakash. Addressing the media, he highlighted how this technology represents a cost-effective and eco-friendly alternative to diesel.

“Indian Railways is venturing into LNG for passenger services for the first time,” Prakash stated. He emphasized that the system delivers nearly three times the benefits in efficiency, cost savings, and environmental performance compared to diesel.

Under this project, Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) trains and their Driving Power Cars (DPC) are being retrofitted to run on a diesel-LNG blend. Two power cars with approximately 1,400 horsepower capacity have already been converted.

Railway authorities reported that both units successfully completed over 2,000 kilometers of field trials. Since then, they have been seamlessly integrated into routine passenger operations without any hitches.

A key advantage of LNG is its drastic reduction in emissions. Compared to diesel-only trains, levels of carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter are substantially lower, leading to improved air quality along rail corridors.

This launch not only underscores Indian Railways’ commitment to green mobility but also sets a precedent for future conversions across the network. As the nation pushes for cleaner energy, such innovations could redefine public transportation in India.
