New Delhi witnessed a seismic shift in its smartphone market throughout 2025, with budget 5G devices leading an unprecedented boom. Shipments of these affordable handsets skyrocketed by over 1,900% year-over-year, propelled by aggressive pricing strategies, widespread availability of entry-level 5G chipsets, and the rapid nationwide rollout of 5G networks.

According to detailed market analysis, the overall smartphone sector in India entered a transformative phase. While premium models held steady demand, the real story unfolded in the ultra-competitive Rs 6,000-8,000 price bracket, where budget 5G phones dominated sales charts. This segment alone captured massive consumer interest, signaling a democratization of high-speed connectivity.

5G penetration reached a staggering 88% of total smartphone shipments, marking a 12% annual increase. No longer confined to flagship devices, 5G has evolved into a market staple, accessible to everyday buyers across urban and rural divides.

Apple bucked broader trends with a robust 25% growth, clinching a 9% market share. The base iPhone 16 model accounted for 47% of its series sales, underscoring a preference for value-driven choices over pro variants amid economic caution.

Industry experts highlight 2025 as a year of rebalancing rather than decline. ‘Despite a slight dip in overall volumes, the explosive rise in budget 5G, sustained premium appetite, and emergence of new players paint a picture of evolution, not erosion,’ noted a senior analyst.

Large-screen smartphones with 6.7-inch or bigger displays claimed nearly 80% market share, reflecting shifting tastes toward immersive viewing experiences. On the chipset front, MediaTek led with 45% dominance in the broader market, while Qualcomm ruled premium tiers at 34%.

Looking ahead to 2026, rising component and memory costs could squeeze prices, prompting more selective buying. Consumers are extending device lifecycles, upgrading only when superior value is evident. This prudent behavior underscores a maturing market poised for strategic growth.
