Indian Railways has given the green light to a 163‑crore project aimed at strengthening the electric traction system in the Parbhani‑Mudhkhed double‑track section of the Nanded division of South Central Railway.
The upgrade will replace the existing single 25 kV traction supply (1×25 kV) with a more robust double‑circuit 25 kV system (2×25 kV) across 164 km of track.
Alongside the new traction loops, power‑supply infrastructure such as substations and feeding lines will be modernised to handle higher electricity demand.
The line forms part of Route‑9 of the highly‑utilised network, linking Ajmer, Indore, Khandwa, Akola, Purna, Mudhkhed, Sikandarabad, Mahbubnagar and Dhan, and is crucial for both passenger and freight movements.
With a stronger power supply, the section is expected to support increased freight tonnage and provide better support for high‑speed services like the Vande Bharat Express.
The enhancement aligns with Indian Railways’ target to move 3,000 million tonnes of freight by FY 2029‑30.
The project is a component of a broader plan to modernise electric infrastructure on the country’s busiest corridors.
