New Delhi marked a significant milestone in regional cooperation by hosting the first-ever BIMSTEC Young Professionals Exchange Program from March 9 to 15, 2026. Organized jointly by India’s Ministry of External Affairs and the Maharashtra government, the week-long event unfolded in the bustling cities of Mumbai and Pune.
This groundbreaking initiative brought together 30 young innovators, technology developers, entrepreneurs, and professionals from BIMSTEC member countries—Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation. The program aimed to foster collaboration and dialogue among the youth of the Bay of Bengal region, creating bridges for future partnerships.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced this visionary program during the sixth BIMSTEC Summit. Its core objectives included promoting knowledge exchange, strengthening regional ties, and exposing participants to India’s thriving ecosystem of startups, innovation, research, and technology.
Participants embarked on insightful visits to key institutions such as IIT Bombay, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, India Diamond Bors, National Stock Exchange, Infosys, and Symbiosis International University. These tours offered hands-on interactions with industry leaders, providing a deep dive into India’s economic and technological advancements.
A highlight was the meeting with Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who underscored the state’s robust knowledge, innovation, and tech ecosystem as a prime platform for international collaborations.
The program empowered young professionals to grasp India’s development model and explore potential synergies. Participants expressed high praise for India’s hospitality and organization.
In line with its ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘Act East’ policies, India is committed to building platforms where young professionals, entrepreneurs, and innovators can connect, learn, and forge long-term partnerships. This initiative will play a pivotal role in bolstering regional cooperation in BIMSTEC, spurring innovation, and creating enduring networks among emerging leaders.
